Lugano is extremely easy to reach with public transportation (the railroad, airplane) and also by private transport (the A2 motorway).
Lugano's airport is in located about 6 Km (4 miles) from Lugano's city centre. It offers direct flight connections from/to Geneva and Zurich (http://www.lugano-airport.ch/), as well as connections via Zurich to most European cities. You can proceed to Lugano city center by taxi (30.00 CHF) or by shuttle service.
The closest Swiss International Airport is Zurich-Kloten (3 hours train ride to Lugano).
Milano is another ideal point of arrival and it is served by three airports: Malpensa, Linate and Bergamo Orio al Serio. The nearest is the airport of Milano-Malpensa which is located about 80 km from Lugano and is connected by a shuttle bus (http://www.malpensaexpress.ch/). Most European cities are connected to Milan with direct flighty.
Lugano is served by the motorway axis that directly connects Northern Europe to the Mediterranean. Travel time from Milan is approximately 1 hour, from Zurich approximately 2 hours.
A2 Motorway: exit Lugano Nord, follow the direction "Lugano-Gandria" to the Vedeggio Cassarate Tunnel. Exit the tunnel and keep going straight till you reach a crossroad (the stadium is in front of you) turn left at the crossroad onto via Alla Bozzoreda. Keep the right lane and turn right at the traffic light onto via Ciani. Keep going straight following the river Cassarate. The underground University parking lot is passed the second traffic light after the Glass Building (The Lab) on your right. If you need to reach the University entrance instead, keep going straight passed the parking lot entrance and turn second right onto via Fusoni. Turn second right onto Via Lambertenghi and keep going straight till the end of the road until you see the University main building in front of you.
Please remember that to drive on Swiss motorways it is necessary to be equipped with the motorway sticker that is to be applied onto the car windshield (the cost: 40.- SFR – valid from Jan.-Dec.) it may be purchased at Customs.
Lugano is situated on the Gotthard main railway line and has very good connection to the rest of Switzerland and Milan. You can find connections here: http://www.sbb.ch/en/home.html.
Travel time is 1h to Milan, 2 h 40 min. to Zurich, 4h to Basel and Bern.
By bus from the train station: go to the bus stop across the street from the train station and take the bus 6 direction Cornaredo and get off at "Università" (3 stops).
On foot (around 20-25 minutes): reach the city centre by taking the pedestrian bridge across the street from the train station and follow the road downhill, or take the funicular from inside the train station. From Piazza Cioccaro head south to Piazza Dante. Walk across the square and turn left onto Via Pretorio. Cross Via Pretorio to get to the bus terminal. Walk pass the bus terminal and keep heading straight onto Corso Pestalozzi until you reach a big underground parking and the entrance of the park Ciani. Turn left onto Via Lucchini and keep walking straight until you reach the University main building (Via Lucchini eventually becomes Via Lambertenghi).
